The art of using color

Colors might be the most powerful and effective element in a picture or movie. Even though a deep study and philosophical understanding of this element can be challenging, what is certain is that colors have a quicker effect and deliver the joy of a picture faster than any other element. Our eyes catch the light easier and faster than any dimension or any geometrical object in a single shot. Apart from the content, we can remember an old advertisement or picture or movie scenes because of the effect of the color in our mind. With some cultural exceptions, we can say that color is a method of communication between humans and the effect of colors can be the same in children and adults, in men and women and every human.

Of course, a good—or better said a perfect—and professional lighting and the use of colored objects will always help us to better deliver the message of our picture and our movie scene. But what if we could deliver this message using the right color in the right place? For instance, in a bright or white scene of a movie or a picture, if our actress dresses a beautiful red robe, she will get all the attention. At the same time if we need less attention on a particular object in a blueish scene, the use of violet on that object or person will keep it away from the viewer’s eyes.

Furthermore, colors have the power of communication. Warm colors represent the sun, sunset and intimacy, while cold colors represent water, shadows, fear and hopelessness (disappointment)

Infinite words can be written about the beauty and even the physiological meaning of colors, but experience is the most important part of our job in lighting a scene and planning to use the right color in the right place. And experience is something that can’t be bought in a shop and is hard to be taught. But the good news is that it can be delivered in a professional consultation. Any scene can become an almost perfect scene. This is what we’re here for, this is one area where Eagle Media Labs is experienced, and we’re ready to consult you on your movie and your scene to make it even better.
