Tether Discontinues Alloy Platform, Sunsets aUSDT Stablecoin in Strategic Reallocation

Tether, the dominant stablecoin issuer, today announced the phased discontinuation of its Alloy by Tether platform and the associated gold-backed aUSDT stablecoin. This strategic recalibration, effective immediately, signals Tether’s sharpened focus on core, high-liquidity products amidst a dynamic digital asset market. The decision follows a comprehensive internal review of user engagement, market demand, and overarching strategic priorities.

Alloy’s Brief Experiment Concludes

Alloy by Tether, introduced in June 2024, was conceived as an open platform to explore digital asset issuance models, notably the overcollateralized stable asset aUSDT. This derivative allowed users to deposit Tether Gold (XAU₮) as collateral to mint a dollar-pegged stablecoin, providing dollar-like liquidity without divesting gold exposure.

Despite its innovative structure, aUSDT achieved limited market adoption. Its market capitalization stood at approximately $1.2 million, backed by 14.73 kilograms of gold, equivalent to about $2.2 million. These figures trailed significantly behind Tether’s flagship USD₮ and even its underlying Tether Gold (XAU₮).

User Redemption Window and Forfeiture

Tether has initiated a phased shutdown to facilitate an orderly transition for existing users. Effective today, the Alloy platform will no longer permit new position openings or the minting of aUSDT.

Current aUSDT holders retain a three-month window, until September 17, 2026, to redeem their aUSDT tokens and withdraw the corresponding XAU₮ collateral. Tether explicitly states that any unredeemed assets after this September 17 deadline will be forfeited.

Strategic Consolidation and Core Product Emphasis

The discontinuation of Alloy and aUSDT reflects Tether’s ongoing strategy to streamline its product offerings and concentrate resources on initiatives demonstrating stronger demand and deeper liquidity. Tether Gold (XAU₮) remains a core component of this refined strategy.

XAU₮ currently holds a market capitalization of approximately $3 billion, backed by over 22,000 kilograms of physical gold. This robust backing and sustained growth underscore Tether’s commitment to tokenized commodities as a viable digital asset class. This move aligns with Tether’s prior decisions to sunset other niche products, including the Chinese yuan-pegged CNHT and the euro-pegged EURT, due to insufficient market traction. Tether’s broader investment strategy also includes ventures into AI, robotics, and digital infrastructure, as evidenced by its recent participation in a $1.4 billion funding round for Neura Robotics.
